Charlie fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith

From DYHA:

It is with great sadness that I inform the membership of the loss of Charlie Capalbo.

Charlie had been fighting cancer for over 5 years. Charlie and his brother Will both played goalie at DYHA and at Fairfield High School Co-op. Charlie’s battle with cancer began shortly after his senior year hockey season at Fairfield HS when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoblastic lymphoma T-cell Stage 3. Charlie had many triumphs and setbacks during his battle with cancer that garnered both state and national media attention.

Charlie and his family are a beacon of hope against cancer as Charlie battled back against his diagnosis multiple times and even attended Fairfield University. Charlie’s brother Will gave the ultimate assist when he underwent bone marrow transplant surgery to help his brother’s fight against cancer. The “Capalbo Strong” motto was used throughout his battle and hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised to assist the family in their struggle with the disease.

Unfortunately, and as was notified by the family yesterday, “After five years and 745 nights spent in hospitals, let’s just say that one got by Charlie in the 4th overtime today. He passed away at 3:00pm, exactly one month before his 24th birthday. When you are a goalie, sometimes you can do everything right, trying as hard as you can, and still lose. “

Charlie truly exemplifies the biblical verse “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have kept the faith”

Charlie is finally at ease and can again take up his position between the pipes in those epic hockey games in Heaven!

As a sign of remembrance in our wonderful hockey community, please put your sticks out for Charlie in remembrance.

God bless Charlie, Will, his parents Anthony and Jennifer and the entire Capalbo family.

Dave Kreppein and the entire DYHA Board
